disapointment

Sat Feb 16, 2008, 7:03 AM
So

I applied for a grant.

And I didn't get it. No surprise.

I guess what hurts the most is NOT ONE traditional representational painter was honored.

This was a state run grant.

They went for all kooky, off the wall stuff.

No beautiful landscapes, no amazing portrait, not breathtaking still life.

Thats what hurts.

I hate the art scene in this time.

I never had a chance.

About me

Fri Feb 8, 2008, 9:24 PM
About me:

I don't know everything. That is the one thing I know. I know a good bit about drawing and I am learning a lot about painting. I feel that I have picked up some good tips over the years and i try to share them with other artists.

My favorite thing about Deviantart is finding other artists who are trying to figure out things and helping them with what I might know.

I do think I am pretty good at what I do. I have SOOOOOO much to learn. Every day is learning. I am like anyone else where somedays I think I am really good..and then 15 minutes later I think I am the worst.

I guess I am very strong minded about liking representational art. I think everyone should learn how to draw..learn the basics before you improvise.

I don't know how much longer I am going to be on Deviantart..and this isn't a cry for sympathy..I'm just not sure it's good for me anymore.

Digital Art

Wed Feb 6, 2008, 12:43 PM
I think I need to clear some things up here.

I don't hate digital art. In fact, I think people can do AMAZING things with it. I have seen digital pieces that I wouldn't know were not paintings had I not been told.

That being said, I think digital mediums is at an disadvantage because there is no art object. There is no original. It's great for a magazine or book or internet page, but how does one view such a piece in a museum? The piece is ALWAYS at the mercy of a machine, either a printer or a monitor. I do not think a printer can create the subtleties that a human hand and a brush can.

Also, we come to the point that there are layers of paint built up on a surface, which creates a dimensional build up of paint. A printer cannot do that. That's why you see giclees painted over with clear acrylic "brushwork"!

It is sad to me that today people don't know that some things being sold in gallerys are actually computer print outs. They should know that giclee is not a type of paint...its a print!

Its a fascinating discussion, one that will go on for a long time I'm sure.

Just give me my brushes and I'll be fine.
